CBS News Correspondent Scott MacFarlane Announces Departure
CBS News Justice Department correspondent Scott MacFarlane has announced his departure from the network after five years. MacFarlane, a high-profile reporter who covered Congress and major events like the 2024 assassination attempt on former President Trump, said the decision to leave is his own.
MacFarlane’s departure comes following Paramount’s acquisition of CBS News and the arrival of new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, which has prompted concerns among journalists about the network’s direction. Weiss was brought in with a mandate to move CBS News to the political center, and is expected to make significant changes to programs like ’60 Minutes’ in the coming months.
Concerns Over Upheaval at CBS News
Journalists at CBS News have been concerned about the changes under Bari Weiss’ leadership, with some saying they are seeing a heavy influx of resumes from the network’s journalists due to the upheaval at the company.
MacFarlane is said to have been unhappy with the network’s handling of the fifth anniversary of the January 6th, 2021 attack on the Capitol, with the ‘CBS Evening News’ briefly presenting it as a difference of opinion between Trump and Democratic leaders in Congress. MacFarlane covered the 1,600 federal cases brought against the participants in the Capitol siege, the largest criminal prosecution in history.
MacFarlane’s Reporting and Threats
MacFarlane was in Butler, Pennsylvania during the 2024 assassination attempt on former President Trump, and reported the first accounts of the shooting scene and emergency responses. Before joining CBS News, he served for eight years as an investigative reporter for the NBC station in Washington, D.C.
MacFarlane is also said to have faced personal threats from MAGA supporters unhappy with his coverage of the Justice Department’s handling of the January 6th investigation. His departure is the first significant name to leave CBS News since Paramount’s acquisition of the network.
